The settlement’s history dates back to 1475, when it was first mentioned in connection with the construction of its initial parish church. A defining period for the town occurred between 1919 and 1920 during the Lithuanian Wars of Independence, as it lay within a neutral zone between Lithuanian and Polish forces. The battles fought in the vicinity were critical in determining the national boundaries of the young republic.
