Širvintos is located in eastern Lithuania along the Širvinta River, serving as the administrative heart of the Širvintos district. The settlement’s history dates back to 1475, when it was first mentioned in connection with the construction of its initial parish church. A defining period for the town occurred between 1919 and 1920 during the Lithuanian Wars of Independence, as it lay within a neutral zone between Lithuanian and Polish forces. The battles fought in the vicinity were critical in determining the national boundaries of the young republic. Geographically, the town is characterized by the easy on the eye Širvinta River valley, which provides ample green spaces and scenic waterways. A prominent modern landmark is the Moose (Briedis) monument, reflecting the natural heritage of the surrounding forests. Today, Širvintos thrives as a growing urban center, benefiting from its strategic proximity to the capital, Vilnius. Its economy is supported by industries such as food production, woodworking, and a burgeoning services sector, all while maintaining a peaceful provincial atmosphere.
