Puntukas Stone (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Puntukas Stone is a massive, moss-covered boulder set in the Anykščiai pinewood, recognized as the second largest and by far the most famous stone of its kind in Lithuania. This colossal block of granite was transported all the way from Scandinavia to the Baltics by glaciers during the last Ice Age, millennia ago. Beyond its geological significance, Puntukas carries a profound historical and cultural resonance: in 1943, a local sculptor secretly carved the profiles of legendary Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, along with excerpts from their testament, deep into the hard rock surface. These national heroes tragically perished in 1933 while attempting to become the first Lithuanians to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. Today, the awe-inspiring boulder rests quietly in the dense forest, surrounded by well-kept pathways, serving as an enduring national monument to courage and perseverance.
