Molėtai Manor (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Molėtai Manor has a history spanning several centuries, having been owned by the Bishops of Vilnius for over 400 years. The first documentary mention of the site as episcopal property dates back to 1387, when the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Jogaila, donated the land to the newly established Diocese of Vilnius. During this long period, the manor functioned as a vital administrative hub for managing church-owned estates in the region. Following the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, the manor was confiscated by the Russian Empire and became state property. The architectural evolution of the estate reflects the shifting ownership and the economic significance of agriculture in eastern Lithuania. Although only fragments of the original manor structures remain today, its historical importance for the urban development of Molėtai endures as a legacy of the episcopal era's administrative and cultural influence.
