Klaipėda Castle, historically known as Memelburg, formed the very nucleus of Lithuania's only major seaport city. Founded in 1252 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in a highly strategic location between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea, it served as a fiercely contested military outpost for centuries. Originally built of wood, the fortress was later reinforced with solid stone walls and complex bastion systems to withstand recurrent Swedish and Russian attacks. Following the Seven Years' War, it lost its strategic military significance and was largely dismantled in the late 19th century. Today, the extensively excavated foundations and restored defensive ramparts form a vital archaeological site, housing a modern Castle Museum that vividly details the turbulent history of the stronghold and the city of Klaipėda.
