Klaipėda LNG Terminal (Lithuania)

Weather…

The LNG terminal in Klaipėda, featuring its aptly named specialized vessel "Independence," is perhaps the most critical infrastructure project in the modern history of Lithuania. Prior to the commissioning of this terminal, Lithuania, like the other Baltic States, was completely dependent on the Russian gas monopolist Gazprom and consequently paid some of the highest gas prices in Europe. The "Independence," a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), changed this dynamic overnight by opening access to the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. By enabling the import of gas from countries such as Norway, the USA, or Qatar, prices dropped dramatically, and energy security was elevated to an unprecedented level. The Klaipėda facility was the first LNG terminal in the entire Baltic Sea region and stands as a prime example of proactive geopolitical planning. Today, the terminal not only serves Lithuania but also reliably supplies gas to neighboring Latvia and Estonia.
