NordBalt Power Connection (Lithuania)

Weather…

NordBalt is a strategically vital high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power link between Klaipėda in Lithuania and Nybro in Sweden. With a total length of approximately 450 kilometers, of which 400 kilometers run as subsea cables across the Baltic Sea floor, it ranks among the longest underwater power connections globally. Launched in 2016, the project aimed to reduce the Baltic states' energy dependence on Russia and integrate them into the Scandinavian Nord Pool electricity market. The link has a transmission capacity of 700 megawatts, roughly equivalent to the output of a medium-sized power plant. Access to cheaper Swedish hydroelectric power has stabilized electricity prices in Lithuania since the link became operational. Technical execution required specialized converter stations at both ends to transform direct current into alternating current for national grids. NordBalt is a cornerstone of the EU strategy to establish a unified European energy market.
