Medvėgalis Hill (Lithuania)

Weather…

At 234.6 meters, Medvėgalis is not only the highest point of the Žemaitija Highland but also a site of immense historical and cultural significance in western Lithuania. The prominent hill actually consists of two distinct peaks, which during the 14th century hosted one of the most formidable wooden fortresses of the Samogitians. This strategic stronghold withstood numerous fierce sieges by the Teutonic Order, earning its status as a symbol of fierce Lithuanian resistance. The natural steepness of the slopes provided excellent defensive advantages, while the sweeping views from the top allowed for early detection of approaching enemies. Today, well-maintained wooden stairs guide visitors up to the summit, from where up to thirteen surrounding village churches can be spotted on a clear day. The hill remains an important archaeological site detailing Lithuania's pagan past.
