Kaišiadorys Cathedral (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ in Kaišiadorys is the religious center of the Diocese of Kaišiadorys and a significant example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Lithuania. Construction began in 1914 according to designs by architect Vaclovas Michnevičius but was interrupted by World War I and only consecrated in 1932. The facade is characterized by red brick walls and slender towers that give the building a majestic vertical dynamism. Inside, there are three aisles decorated with artistic vaults and colorful stained-glass windows. The cathedral holds special historical significance as the resting place of Blessed Teofilius Matulionis, an archbishop known for his resistance against the Soviet regime. The crypt is now an important pilgrimage site for believers from across Lithuania. During World War II, the cathedral suffered damage but was carefully restored in the post-war period. The building stands not only for faith but also for national identity and resistance against oppression. Kaišiadorys became an important spiritual hub in the center of the country thanks to this sacred center.
