Birutė Hill
Birutė Hill (Birutės kalnas) is a prominent, 21-meter-high coastal sand dune located in the popular seaside resort town of Palanga, directly on the Baltic Sea coast. Geologically, it is a classic parabolic dune sculpted over millennia by constant maritime winds, which was eventually overgrown and stabilized by an ancient, twisted pine forest. However, the hill is most famously known for its immense cultural, historical, and mythological significance. During pre-Christian times, it served as a major pagan sanctuary featuring a sacred eternal fire guarded by Vaidelotės (pagan priestesses). According to national legend, Birutė, who later became the wife of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis and the mother of Vytautas the Great, originated from this very site. In the 19th century, a small, easy on the eye octagonal neo-Gothic chapel was erected on the summit. Today, the hill is a highly romantic landmark within the Palanga Botanical Park, offering idyllic views of the sea.
