Taucheira (Tocra) (Libya)

Weather…

Taucheira, known in modern Libya as Tocra, was one of the five constituent cities of the ancient Cyrenaic Pentapolis. Established in the 7th century BC by colonists from Cyrene, the city grew into a vital commercial and military outpost on the Mediterranean coast. During the Ptolemaic period, it was briefly renamed Arsinoe after the wife of Ptolemy II, though its original name eventually prevailed. The archaeological remains visible today primarily date from the Late Roman and Byzantine eras, most notably the massive defensive walls fortified with square towers, built to protect the inhabitants from nomadic incursions. Within these walls lie the ruins of Byzantine fortresses, churches adorned with mosaic floors, and the foundations of Roman villas. Tocra is particularly distinguished by the high density of Greek inscriptions and pottery found at the site, providing rich evidence of daily life and social structures in North Africa prior to its decline following the Arab conquest in the 7th century.
