Tukrah, historically known as Taucheira, is a major archaeological and modern settlement on the coast of Cyrenaica in eastern Libya. Founded in the 7th century BC as one of the five colonies of the Greek Pentapolis, it remained a center of Hellenistic and later Roman culture for centuries. The impressive Byzantine city walls, which still enclose much of the site today, testify to the strategic importance of the location toward the end of antiquity. During the Ptolemaic era, the city was briefly renamed Arsinoe before reverting to its original name under Roman rule. Geographically, Tukrah is situated in a fertile coastal plain north of the Jebel Akhdar mountains, which has supported intensive agriculture since ancient times. Today, the town functions as a modern administrative center while preserving its monumental history, which includes extensive excavations of temples, churches, and defensive structures that attract scholarly interest.
