Al Marj is a historically significant city in northeastern Libya, positioned within a fertile valley of the Jebel Akhdar mountain range. The city occupies the site of ancient Barce, a Greek colony established in the 6th century BC that grew into a major power in the Cyrenaica region. A catastrophic earthquake in 1963 nearly leveled the original town, necessitating the construction of a new settlement approximately 5 kilometers from the historic location. Today, Al Marj functions as a vital agricultural hub for the region, taking advantage of the higher-than-average rainfall levels characteristic of the Green Mountain area. The local economy is driven primarily by cereal farming and livestock production, particularly sheep herding. Archaeological investigations in the vicinity have yielded numerous artifacts from the Hellenistic and Roman eras, highlighting the area's ancient prestige. Its strategic location on the main highway connecting Benghazi and Tobruk makes it an essential commercial and transport node in eastern Libya.
