Cyrene (Libya)

Weather…

Cyrene, located in the lush highlands of the Cyrenaica region in northeastern Libya, was one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Greek world. Established in 631 BC by settlers from the island of Thera, it rapidly grew into a major center of Hellenic culture, philosophy, and trade. The city was uniquely famous for the export of silphium, a highly prized medicinal plant that was so valuable it was depicted on Cyrenian coins. The archaeological site features monumental structures such as the Temple of Zeus, which is larger than the Parthenon in Athens, and the extensive Sanctuary of Apollo. Cyrene was home to the Cyrenaic school of philosophy and famous scholars like Eratosthenes, the mathematician who first calculated the Earth's circumference. UNESCO recognized Cyrene as a World Heritage site in 1982. Its sprawling necropolis, containing thousands of rock-cut tombs, is considered one of the largest and best-preserved ancient cemeteries in existence. The ruins provide a magnificent view of the fusion between Greek architectural origins and subsequent Roman urban expansions.
