Moteng Pass Slopes (Lesotho)

Weather…

The slopes of Moteng Pass offer a glimpse into the resilient and specialized alpine ecosystem of Lesotho’s northern highlands. Situated at an elevation of 2,820 meters, the terrain is characterized by steep basalt cliffs and high-altitude grasslands. The flora here is dominated by various species of Helichrysum, commonly known as everlastings, which have adapted to the intense solar radiation and frequent frost. For birdwatchers, the pass is a legendary site for spotting the rare Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier), often seen soaring majestically on thermal currents alongside Cape Vultures and Lanner Falcons. The rocky outcrops also provide shelter for ice rats and rock hyraxes. During the winter months, the slopes are frequently blanketed in snow, creating a starkly beautiful landscape that challenges even the hardiest mountain life. The pass serves as a vital gateway to the diamond mines and ski resorts further east, but the slopes themselves remain a pristine sanctuary for biodiversity, where the interaction between geology, climate, and wildlife creates a unique natural theater in the Maloti Mountains.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is best achieved by parking at the safe pullouts along the pass road and then carefully exploring the adjacent mountain slopes on foot. There are no developed trails, so visitors must find their own way.
📅
Best season
Spring and summer, roughly from October to February, are the good seasons for a visit. During this time, the alpine flora blooms, and the high-altitude slopes become a paradise for birdwatchers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain off the road is characterized by extremely steep, grassy, and rocky inclines that are difficult to traverse. Since there are hardly any formal trails, moving here demands a high level of physical agility.
🎒
What to bring
A telephoto lens or high-quality binoculars are essential for birdwatching on these steep slopes. Sturdy footwear with very good grip and an identification guide for the local flora should be part of the basic equipment.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors should use the same pullouts and viewpoints as the transiting travelers on the main pass. It is vital not to stop on blind corners in order not to endanger traffic safety.
⚠️
Safety
The seemingly gentle slopes are deceptively steep and become extremely slippery when wet. To avoid accidents, always maintain a generous distance from cliff edges and areas of loose scree.
⏱️
Time needed
Dedicated birdwatchers and botanists can easily spend two to four hours here systematically exploring the accessible areas of the slopes. Ordinary travelers usually only linger for a short, scenic walk.
