Zahrani Oil Refinery (Lebanon)

Weather…

The facilities in Zahrani in southern Lebanon historically played a key geopolitical role, as they formed the terminus of the Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline), through which Saudi crude oil was pumped to the Mediterranean. In its heyday before the Lebanese Civil War, the Zahrani refinery was a massive economic engine, providing thousands of jobs and supplying the domestic market and abroad with petrochemical products. Although direct refining activities ceased decades ago due to political upheavals and severe war damage, the area remains of great strategic importance. Today, Zahrani functions as the main state-owned tank farm and import terminal for liquid fuels in southern Lebanon. It secures the supply for the neighboring, eponymous Zahrani power plant as well as local fuel distributors. Plans for its revitalization as a modern refinery or as a terminal for future Lebanese offshore gas extraction underscore the continued economic potential of this site.
