Sidon Sea Castle (Lebanon)

Weather…

Sidon Sea Castle (Qala'at al-Bahr) was built in the early 13th century when Crusaders erected a fortress on a small island off the coast of the Phoenician city. The island is connected to the mainland by an 80-meter-long massive stone bridge. The exterior walls were built using remains of earlier Phoenician and Roman structures, including the temple of Melqart; column fragments can still be seen embedded in the walls today. The fortress protected the harbor as a strategic point but changed hands several times between the Mamluks and the Crusaders, resulting in continuous rebuilding. In the 17th century, the Druze Emir Fakhreddine restored it, and during the Ottoman period, it was equipped with firearms. On a clear day, the northern tower gives an excellent view of the ancient city center and the coastline. Today, it is one of Lebanon's most iconic monuments, faithfully reflecting the country's turbulent history.
