Tyre Hippodrome (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Tyre Hippodrome is a Roman chariot racing arena dating from the 2nd century and is one of the largest and best-preserved such structures in the world. Measuring 480 meters in length and 90 meters in width, the arena could accommodate up to 20,000 spectators at its peak. A distinctive feature of the structure is a massive obelisk carved from granite, which stood on the spina in the center of the track. The seating tiers were supported by vaulted galleries that once housed shops and workshops. It was actively used during the Byzantine period until a 6th-century earthquake severely damaged it. The starting gates of the competitors (carceres) and the lines marking the finish line have been excavated among the ruins. The site is part of the al-Bass archaeological complex, which also includes an extensive necropolis and a monumental triumphal arch. In 1984, the entire Tyre archaeological area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
