Maghdouche (Lebanon)

Weather…

Maghdouche is one of South Lebanon's most significant holy sites, perched on a hill overlooking the city of Sidon and the Mediterranean coastline. The town is famous for the cave of Mantara (meaning 'waiting'), where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary waited for Jesus while he preached in Sidon. Today, the sanctuary is crowned by an impressive 28-meter tower supporting a gilded bronze statue of Mary and the Child, a landmark visible for miles. The religious complex includes the original small cave, rediscovered by chance in 1721, and a large modern basilica. Pilgrims from all over the world come here to pray and experience the spiritual atmosphere. The view from the hilltop is unparalleled, offering panoramic vistas over vast fruit orchards stretching down to the sea. The village of Maghdouche itself is also renowned for its production of high-quality orange blossom water, a staple in Lebanese gastronomy. Reaching the site is convenient as it is located just a few kilometers southeast of Sidon. The best time to visit is during the spring when the citrus trees are in bloom, and their scent fills the air across the hill. Major religious feasts, especially the Assumption of Mary in August, draw thousands of visitors. Maghdouche gives a profound combination of faith, history, and some of the most beautiful views in Lebanon.
