Sidon, locally known as Saida, is one of Lebanon's oldest and most historically significant cities, serving as a cornerstone of the Phoenician civilization. Located on the Mediterranean coast south of Beirut, the city is home to over 6,000 years of continuous habitation and was once a dominant maritime trading power in the ancient world. Famous for its glassmaking and purple dye trade, Sidon withstood numerous conquerors, from the Assyrians to Alexander the Great. Its most iconic landmark is the Sidon Sea Castle, built by the Crusaders in 1228 on a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway. The atmospheric old city features winding alleys, traditional souks, and medieval mosques that reflect its diverse historical layers. Beyond its history, modern Sidon is a bustling economic hub with a bustling fishing port and a productive citrus industry. The city's Soap Museum preserves the centuries-old tradition of artisanal olive oil soap making characteristic of the region.
