Monastery of Mar Sarkis (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Monastery of Mar Sarkis (Saints Sergius and Bacchus) is one of the oldest Christian refuges in the Kadisha Valley (Holy Valley), located along the steep cliffs of northern Lebanon. Dating back to the 8th century, the complex consists of several buildings built into the natural caves and ledges of the mountainside. In the early centuries, it served as a haven for persecuted Maronite monks. Exceptional Byzantine frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries have survived in the monastery's chapels, depicting the faces of Christ, Mary, and saints, ranking among the earliest examples of religious art in the region. In the 17th century, the monastery also played a significant role in the introduction of the first printing press in Lebanon (Quzhaya), which revolutionized the dissemination of liturgy. The building is accompanied by terraced agricultural gardens created and cultivated by the monks who once lived here, making clever use of the limited water resources.
