Deir Ammar Power Plant (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Deir Ammar power plant is located in the North Lebanon region near the city of Tripoli and is one of the newest and most strategically important thermal power plants in the country. It was developed to stabilize the highly fluctuating power supply in the north and to support the overloaded older power plants. Originally designed as a dual-fuel facility capable of operating on both natural gas and liquid fuels, it was supposed to mark a milestone on the path to cleaner energy production. However, due to the lack of a reliable gas infrastructure and a connection to international gas pipelines, the power plant is mostly operated with expensive and imported gas oil. Despite technical advantages over older facilities such as Zouk or Jieh, Deir Ammar also regularly suffers from the Lebanese state's chronic shortage of foreign currency, which hampers the procurement of fuel and thus leads to nationwide blackouts.
