Tripoli Citadel (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Citadel of Tripoli (Citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles) is one of the oldest and largest military fortresses in Lebanon. Its origins date back to 1103 when the Count of Toulouse, a leader of the First Crusade, built a castle on Pilgrim's Mount to control the port and routes. The fortress was besieged and captured by the Mamluk Sultan Qalawun in 1289, who then rebuilt it. Over the following centuries, the Ottoman Empire expanded it several times, thickening its walls and adding new bastions for artillery. The architectural layers of different eras are clearly visible: the cross vaults of the Crusaders, the Mamluk inscriptions, and the Ottoman-style windows. The massive complex also housed prisons, stables, a mosque, and water reservoirs. Today, the citadel is a restored museum, offering a panoramic view of northern Lebanon's largest city.
