Shamaldy-Say Hydroelectric Power Station (Kyrgyzstan)

Weather…

The Shamaldy-Say Hydroelectric Power Station is the fourth stage of the Naryn Cascade in Kyrgyzstan, located on the lower reaches of the Naryn River. With an installed capacity of 240 MW, it is considered a medium-sized facility within the national power grid. Construction began during the final years of the Soviet era and continued after Kyrgyzstan's independence, with full operational capacity reached in the mid-1990s. The station is equipped with three Kaplan turbines, each providing 80 MW, specifically designed for lower hydraulic heads. As a run-of-the-river plant without a major reservoir, its energy output is directly dependent on the water discharge from the upstream Toktogul, Kurpsai, and Tash-Kumyr stations. Shamaldy-Say produces approximately 900 million kWh of electricity annually. It plays a significant role in supplying power to the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan and maintaining the stability of the local grid. Despite the economic hardships during its completion phase, the plant remains a profitable and reliable asset of the Kyrgyz energy sector. Ongoing maintenance focuses on extending the service life of mechanical components and optimizing water usage efficiency.
