Jalal-Abad, with about 110,000 inhabitants, is Kyrgyzstan's third-largest city and the capital of the eponymous region in the northern Fergana Valley. It lies at around 770 metres above sea level at the foot of the Babash-Ata range, in an easy on the eye landscape of dense walnut forests, apple orchards and broad rice paddies. The city is best known for its hot, sulphur-rich springs, which have drawn pilgrims and travellers since medieval times and were developed into a major spa town under the Russian Empire. Today Jalal-Abad is regarded as the most important sanatorium centre in Central Asia. Its economy rests on food processing, the cotton and tobacco industries, and trade in the produce of the surrounding farms. Nearby lies the world-famous Arslanbob forest, the largest natural walnut woodland on Earth, whose trees are said to have once fed the armies of Alexander the Great.
