Sary-Chelek Lake (Kyrgyzstan)

Weather…

Sary-Chelek Lake is the focal point of the Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve, situated in the Jalal-Abad Region of western Kyrgyzstan. It was formed approximately 800 years ago by a massive landslide that obstructed the Kojo-Ata River, creating a deep alpine basin at an elevation of 1,873 meters. Stretching about 7.5 kilometers in length and reaching a maximum depth of 234 meters, it is one of the deepest and most visually memorable lakes in Central Asia. The name translates to 'Yellow Bucket,' reflecting the golden hues of the surrounding vegetation and the reflection of autumn foliage in its crystal-clear waters. The area was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 to safeguard its unique biodiversity, which includes over 1,000 species of plants and rare animals such as the snow leopard. Surrounded by steep mountain ridges and dense forests of spruce, fir, and walnut, the lake provides a pristine environment far removed from industrial development.
