Kyzyl-Kiya lies at the southern edge of Kyrgyzstan on the rim of the Fergana Valley at around 950 metres above sea level, right next to the Uzbek border, and is home to about 50,000 inhabitants today. Its name can be loosely translated as Red Slope and refers to the reddish sandstone formations from which high-quality bituminous coal has been mined since the late 19th century. The town was founded in 1898 with the start of industrial coal extraction and during the Soviet era ranked among the most important mining centres of Central Asia. Today, besides the much-reduced coal industry, Kyzyl-Kiya hosts a cement works, a brickyard, a cable plant and workshops for the repair of mining machinery. Close economic ties with neighbouring Uzbekistan have produced a markedly multi-ethnic population, with Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Tajiks and Russians living side by side and giving the town an unusually multilingual character.
