Sülüktü lies at the far western edge of the Batken Region at the foot of the Turkestan Range at about 1090 metres above sea level and has roughly 25,000 inhabitants. The town is one of the oldest mining settlements in Central Asia: already in the late 19th century coal was being extracted here under the Tsarist government to fuel the Russian railway and the garrisons of the Fergana Valley. In the 1920s a narrow-gauge industrial railway was built that carried coal straight from the pits to the main line into Tajikistan; it remains one of the few still-functioning narrow-gauge railways in the region and is now considered a technical monument. Sülüktü sits in a corner of the country that can only be reached from the rest of Kyrgyzstan via a long detour through Tajikistan or over difficult mountain roads, leaving it politically and economically heavily dependent on its neighbours.
