Margilan is the silk capital of Uzbekistan, lying just ten kilometres north of Fergana in the fertile Fergana Valley. With more than 200,000 inhabitants, it has a history of well over two thousand years; as early as the first century BC it was known as a marketplace for silk imported from China. Today around ninety per cent of all Uzbek silk fabrics begin their journey here. The famous Yodgorlik Silk Factory still produces hand-woven atlas and adras textiles by traditional methods; their vivid, ikat-dyed patterns are coveted around the world. The Khonakah Mosque and the Said-Akhmad-Khoja madrasa complex are also worth a visit. Margilan is considered religiously conservative and has a strong artisan tradition; many families have worked in the silk industry for generations, passing their skills from parent to child.
