Fergana is the youngest of the three major cities in the valley that bears its name, founded only in 1876 as a Russian garrison town called New Margelan. It was renamed Skobelev in 1907 and received its present name in 1924. With around 270,000 inhabitants, its broad tree-lined avenues, parks, and neoclassical administrative buildings give the city a distinctly European feel compared with other Uzbek cities. Economically Fergana plays a central role: it hosts the country's largest oil refinery, a nitrogen-fertiliser plant, and numerous textile mills. Fergana State University and a state theatre further shape the cityscape. Thanks to its well-developed infrastructure, the city serves as a handy base for trips to traditional Margilan and to Kokand.
