McKean Island (Kiribati)

Weather…

McKean Island is a remote coral atoll located in the central Pacific Ocean, forming part of the Phoenix Islands in the Republic of Kiribati. Covering a mere 0.57 square kilometers, this uninhabited island is a vital sanctuary for maritime biodiversity. It is globally recognized as a premier bird nesting site, hosting tens of thousands of seabirds, such as frigatebirds and boobies, which rely on its isolation for survival. The island is an integral component of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), one of the world's largest marine protected areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Geographically, McKean features a shallow central lagoon that often dries out, surrounded by coral sand and sparse, salt-tolerant vegetation. While it saw brief human activity in the 19th century during the guano mining era, it is now strictly protected. Access is granted almost exclusively for scientific research, ensuring that the fragile ecological balance of this isolated outpost remains undisturbed by external pressures.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
For overall seabird diversity, visit between June and September when many species nest. The island's low profile makes it vulnerable to storms, so check weather windows.
🌅
Best time of day
During the cool dawn hours, birds depart from and return to the island en masse. Sunset provides a spectacular view of birds settling for the night.
📜
Etiquette
This is a strictly protected sanctuary; never pick up feathers, eggs, or any objects. Keep at least 20 meters from nesting birds to avoid causing nest abandonment.
🎒
What to bring
A waterproof bag protects equipment from occasional salt spray during landing. Binoculars with good close focus help observe nesting behaviors without approaching.
🧭
Getting there
McKean is reachable only by private or charter vessel from Kiritimati; landing requires calm seas and a small boat. A permit from the Phoenix Islands Protected Area is mandatory.
🦌
What to expect
Thousands of birds may seem noisy but many are shy; sit quietly and wait for them to resume normal activities. Overcast days often keep birds grounded, offering easier viewing.
