Port of Umm Qasr (Iraq)

Weather…

The Port of Umm Qasr is Iraq's only deep-water port, situated in the Basra Governorate at the mouth of the Khawr Abd Allah, which leads into the Persian Gulf. Established in 1958, the port was built to bypass the limitations of the river port in Basra and to provide access for large ocean-going vessels. It is of immense strategic and economic importance, as it handles the vast majority of Iraq's non-oil imports, including vital food aid and grain shipments. Administratively, the port is divided into the North Port and the South Port, which together operate 21 berths for various types of cargo. Over the last several decades, Umm Qasr has been a central target during military conflicts, particularly in the 1991 and 2003 Gulf Wars, leading to significant infrastructure damage. Today, the port is undergoing continuous modernization with the addition of new container terminals and logistics hubs to increase efficiency. Its location near the Kuwaiti border makes it a sensitive geopolitical focal point in the region.
