Karaj is a rapidly expanding metropolis located at the foothills of the Alborz Mountains, approximately 36 kilometers west of Tehran. Serving as the capital of Alborz Province, it has evolved from a small agricultural town into Iran's fourth-largest city and a critical industrial hub. Its strategic location on the main transit route between Tehran and the northwestern provinces, as well as Turkey, has fueled its economic growth. Karaj is home to a vast array of industries, including automotive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, making it an essential driver of the national economy. The city is also an academic center, hosting the University of Tehran's Faculty of Agriculture, which is the oldest of its kind in Iran. One of the most significant landmarks in Karaj is the Pearl Palace (Morvarid Palace), a futuristic architectural gem designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation for Princess Shams Pahlavi. The Karaj River flows through the city, and the nearby Amir Kabir Dam provides a scenic recreational area for hiking, fishing, and boating, while also supplying water to the capital. The city's climate is notably cooler and less polluted than Tehran's, attracting many residents who commute to the capital via the efficient Tehran-Karaj metro line. Karaj is often called 'Little Iran' due to its diverse ethnic makeup, with migrants from across the country bringing their unique languages, cuisines, and traditions. The city also serves as a gateway to the Chalus Road, one of the most beautiful mountain routes in the world, leading to the Caspian Sea coast. Despite its urban sprawl, Karaj maintains several large parks and orchards, preserving some of its historical identity as a lush summer retreat for the elite of past eras.
