Mahabodhi Temple (India)

Weather…

The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya is regarded as the most sacred site in Buddhism, marking the location where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and became the Buddha in the 6th century BCE. While the original shrine was established by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, the current monumental structure dates back to the late Gupta period in the 5th or 6th century CE. Standing 55 meters tall, the pyramidal temple is constructed primarily of brick and is embellished with intricate niches containing Buddha statues. To the immediate west of the tower sits the sacred Bodhi Tree, a direct descendant of the original tree under which the Buddha meditated for seven weeks. The temple underwent significant restorations in the late 19th century under British and Burmese supervision after centuries of neglect. The complex features the Diamond Throne (Vajrasana) and several votive stupas built by devotees over two millennia. In 2002, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its profound influence on the development of religious architecture in Asia.
