Kulekhani Fish Farms (Nepal)

Weather…

The Kulekhani Reservoir, also known as Indrasarowar, is the largest man-made body of water in Nepal, located in the Makwanpur district. The reservoir was created in 1982 following the construction of a 114-meter-high rock-fill dam for the Kulekhani Hydropower Project. A significant inland fishery has developed in the clear waters of the lake, primarily based on the cage culture of carp species. Local cooperatives breed silver carp and bighead carp here, providing an economic foundation for hundreds of families in the region. The fish farms utilize the nutrient-rich conditions of the stagnant water to produce large quantities of fish annually for markets in Kathmandu and Hetauda. Besides its economic importance, the area serves as a key example of integrated water resource management in Nepal. The pretty location in the hills also makes it a popular destination for local weekend tourism.
