Best season
Herdubreðarlindir is at its best from June to August when the meadow flowers and angelica are in full bloom. The best time for wildlife is early summer when the birdlife is most active.

The golden hour in late afternoon gives the best light for photography and increases chances of seeing reindeer or Arctic foxes. Early morning the birds are especially active in the oasis's dense greenery.
Etiquette
Stay on the paths to avoid damaging the sensitive moss and lichen vegetation. Picking plants is prohibited, and feeding animals can lead to unwanted behavior.
What to bring
A camera with a macro lens is excellent for detailed flora photography. Good hiking boots with a treaded sole are important as the ground can be uneven and mixed with lava scree.
Getting there
Herdubreðarlindir is located in the highlands north of Vatnajökull, reachable via Ring Road 1 and then road F910, which is suitable only for 4x4 vehicles. The drive is long but the seclusion is worth it.
What to expect
The oasis is small and quiet - wildlife is not as dense as on the coasts. Take time for walks and enjoy the silence; the reward is the unique atmosphere of this under-the-radar destination.
