Dettifoss (Iceland)

Weather…

Dettifoss is widely regarded as the most powerful waterfall in Europe, showcasing the raw geological force of Iceland. Part of the Vatnajökull National Park, it is 100 meters wide and plunges 44 meters down into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The massive volume of silty glacial water creates a thunderous roar and a mist that can be seen from far away. It is accessible from two main roads on the east and west sides of the river; the west side (Road 862) is paved and generally easier to reach. The surrounding landscape is desolate and moon-like, characterized by dark basalt pillars and steep cliffs. Hikers can follow trails to nearby waterfalls like Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the roads are clear of snow. Be sure to wear waterproof gear, as the spray from the falls can soak you within minutes, even from the viewing platforms.
