Lake Myvatn Bird Reserve (Iceland)

Weather…

The Lake Myvatn Bird Reserve in northern Iceland is recognized as one of the most significant nesting sites for waterfowl in the world. Established as a protected area in 1974, it encompasses approximately 37 square kilometers of land surrounding the shallow, nutrient-rich volcanic lake. The lake itself was formed during a massive basaltic lava eruption roughly 2,300 years ago, which created the unique topography seen today. The area is renowned for its incredible density of duck species, with 15 different types regularly breeding here, a feat unmatched elsewhere globally. Notably, it serves as one of the very few European nesting grounds for the Barrow's goldeneye. The lake's abundant insect life, particularly the midge larvae known as chironomids, provides the primary food source for the vast avian population. The surrounding landscape also features rare geological structures, including the Skútustaðir pseudocraters and the complex lava formations of Dimmuborgir.
