Siglufjörður is the northernmost town in Iceland, set in a narrow fjord of the same name on the northern coast of the Tröllaskagi Peninsula. During the first half of the 20th century, the town experienced an unprecedented economic boom as the herring fishing capital of the world, with its population peaking at over 3,000 residents. This golden era is now vividly preserved in the award-winning Herring Era Museum, spread across five historical buildings by the harbor. Following the collapse of the herring stocks in the 1960s, the town successfully diversified its economy, focusing on tourism, services, and niche industries. The completion of the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnels in 2010 ended the town's geographical isolation, providing year-round access to neighboring Ólafsfjörður. The town is also famous for its annual Folk Music Festival, which celebrates traditional Icelandic musical heritage. The surrounding steep mountains offer exceptional skiing conditions in winter and challenging hiking trails during the summer months.
