Dettifoss (Iceland)

Weather…

Dettifoss is a massive waterfall located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, widely regarded as one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. It is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and carries a high load of sediment from the highlands. The waterfall measures 100 meters in width and has a vertical drop of 44 meters into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The average water flow is approximately 193 cubic meters per second, but this can increase dramatically to over 600 cubic meters during the peak glacier melt in summer. The sediment-rich water often appears grayish-white, giving the falls a raw and powerful aesthetic. Dettifoss gained international fame as a filming location, most notably for the opening sequence of the 2012 sci-fi film Prometheus. The surrounding terrain is characterized by stark volcanic rock and vast basalt formations, emphasizing the untamed natural power of the Icelandic landscape.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
Dettifoss lies open to visitors in Vatnajökull National Park year-round, though winter access can be limited. The waterfall can be seen from designated viewing platforms on either side of the canyon; the east bank has better infrastructure.
🕒
Typical hours
The waterfall site itself has no set hours and can be visited at any time. Most visitors come between June and August when daylight is abundant and roads are clear.
📷
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere, but keep a safe distance from the edge due to mist and slippery rocks. A wide-angle lens is recommended to capture the full scale of the falls; tripods are fine but beware of strong winds.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend about 30-45 minutes at the main viewpoint. If you also hike to nearby Selfoss waterfall upstream, plan for 1.5 to 2 hours round trip, as the walk along the canyon rim has additional photo opportunities.
Combine with
Combine Dettifoss with nearby Selfoss waterfall, just a 30-minute walk upstream. Further south, the Ásbyrgi canyon and Hljóðaklettar rock formations are also worth a visit as part of the Diamond Circle route; many travelers take a day tour from Akureyri.
🧭
Getting there
By car, take Route 862 from the Ring Road (Road 1) to the eastern parking lot; the western side is via Road 864, which is rougher. A 4x4 is recommended for the unpaved roads, especially in wet conditions; public transport is limited.
💡
Insider tip
Bring waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes without fail, as the mist from the waterfall can soak you quickly. Visit Dettifoss in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and get the best light.
