Herðubreið (Iceland)

Weather…

Herðubreið is a prominent tuya (table mountain) in the northern highlands of Iceland, often referred to as the 'Queen of Icelandic Mountains'. Standing at 1,682 meters, it rises in isolation from the vast Ódáðahraun lava desert. Its distinctive shape, characterized by steep sides and a flat top, was formed by volcanic eruptions occurring beneath a thick glacier during the last Ice Age. For a long time, Herðubreið was considered unclimbable due to its vertical walls and unstable scree; the first successful ascent was only recorded in 1908. At the mountain's base lies the Herðubreiðarlindir oasis, where natural springs allow rare vegetation to thrive in the desert environment. Historically, this area served as a hideout for outlaws, most notably the legendary Fjalla-Eyvindur, who survived in the wilderness for years.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this remote highland table mountain entails a very long, arduous drive on demanding interior F-roads. A specialized, high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is completely mandatory to cross deep unbridged rivers.
📅
Best season
Access is strictly limited to a brief summer window, usually from mid-July to early September. Throughout the rest of the year, roads are buried in snow and impassable to regular traffic.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding landscape is a vast, desolate desert of black pumice and lava fields. The actual ascent is incredibly steep, featuring loose scree and highly unstable rock slides near the flat summit.
🎒
What to bring
Heavy-duty mountaineering boots are required for ankle support on the treacherous loose scree. Hikers must be entirely self-sufficient, carrying ample food, water, and emergency shelter equipment.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are parked near a designated highland oasis campsite located at the base of the mountain. Facilities here are extremely basic and meant only for hardy, well-prepared wilderness travelers.
⚠️
Safety
Scaling this mountain is notoriously dangerous due to falling rocks and completely unpredictable sudden storms. Only highly experienced hikers in excellent physical condition should attempt the summit.
⏱️
Time needed
The demanding hike from the base camp to the flat top and back takes a gruelling ten to twelve hours. Reaching the remote location itself requires a full day of dedicated, careful highland driving.
