Rezi Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Rezi Castle is located on a 427-meter-high dolomite cliff in the Keszthely Mountains of western Hungary. The fortress was likely built at the end of the 13th century by the Atyusz clan before passing into royal hands and later becoming the property of the Lackfi and Pethő families. For a long time, it served as an important strategic point for monitoring trade routes between Lake Balaton and the Styrian border region. During the Ottoman wars, the castle played a secondary role and was finally abandoned in the late 16th century, probably after 1589, leading to its gradual decay. Today, the conserved ruins offer a wide panoramic view over the Tapolca Basin and the surrounding volcanic witness mountains. Archaeological excavations in the 2000s helped to better understand the original structure of the upper castle and the residential tower, making it safely accessible to modern tourists.
