Egervár Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Egervár Castle is a significant late Gothic and Renaissance fortress in Zala County, located about 10 kilometers north of Zalaegerszeg. First mentioned in 1281, the castle was transformed into a modern moated fortress by the Egerváry family in the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács, it came under the ownership of the Nádasdy family, who expanded it in Renaissance style to defend against Ottoman incursions. Its present-day Baroque appearance was finalized by the Széchényi family in the 18th century, converting the military stronghold into a comfortable aristocratic residence. The square-plan castle, featuring four distinctive corner towers and a courtyard lined with elegant arcades, is an exceptional example of Hungarian fortification architecture. Today, the castle serves as a regional history museum and a popular venue for open-air summer theater performances and cultural festivals, surrounded by a peaceful park landscape.
