Zalaegerszeg Clothing Factory (Hungary)

Weather…

The Zalaegerszeg Clothing Factory, widely known as ZA-KO, was for decades one of the flagship enterprises of the Hungarian light industry. Established in 1951 during the era of socialist industrialization, it aimed to provide employment opportunities in the Western Hungarian region. The factory early on specialized in high-quality men's wear, particularly suits and blazers, which were sold not only on the domestic market but also exported in large volumes to Western countries. In its heyday, the company employed several thousand workers, predominantly women, making it the largest employer in the city of Zalaegerszeg. Following the political regime change in 1989, the plant had to adapt to global market competition, which led to significant modernization as well as staff reductions. Despite increasing competition from the Far East, the factory remained a symbol of craftsmanship and Hungarian textile tradition for a long time before production finally ceased due to changing global market conditions.
