Letenye is a small Hungarian town in Zala County, located directly on the border with Croatia. Situated in the Mura River valley, the town has long served as a crucial transport hub between Central Europe and the Balkans. Historically, Letenye was first mentioned in 1341 and developed into a regional center under the influence of the aristocratic Andrássy and Szapáry families. The town's most significant architectural heritage is the Andrássy-Szapáry Mansion, surrounded by a grand estate park. This park is home to a massive Oriental plane tree (Platanus), estimated to be over 500 years old, making it one of the largest and oldest trees in Hungary. Since Croatia's entry into the Schengen Area, the local border crossing's function has evolved, yet Letenye remains a vital logistical gateway along the M7 motorway. The surrounding area also provides ample opportunities for fishing and exploring the pristine floodplain forests of the Mura.
