Sümeg Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Sümeg Castle is one of Western Hungary's largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses, standing majestically atop a 270-meter-high limestone hill. Its construction began in the mid-13th century commissioned by the Bishops of Veszprém, and it was continuously expanded over subsequent centuries. The castle's strategic importance surged after 1552 when, following the Ottoman capture of Veszprém, Sümeg became the temporary episcopal seat and a crucial border stronghold. The fortress successfully withstood multiple Ottoman sieges, remaining an essential bastion of defense throughout the era. Today, the castle is a spirited center for historical reenactments, famous for its grand knightly tournaments and medieval feasts. The complex features the restored episcopal palace, a torture chamber, a blacksmith's shop, and an armory. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views stretching across the Bakony Mountains and the Tapolca Basin from the ramparts. Sümeg Castle is not just a historical monument but a living cultural hub that provides an immersive medieval experience for all visitors.
