Nagylengyel Oil Field
The Nagylengyel oil field is one of Hungary's historically most significant hydrocarbon deposits. Discovered in 1951, it marked a turning point in Hungarian energy supply following World War II. The field is characterized by its geological uniqueness, as the extracted oil has a very high bitumen and sulfur content, making it particularly valuable for road construction. During its peak years in the 1950s and 1960s, Nagylengyel covered a substantial portion of Hungary's oil demand and was the largest production area in the country. Today, production continues using advanced technologies such as carbon dioxide injection to mobilize the remaining reserves in deeper rock layers. The industrial development of Zala County was heavily influenced by this discovery, leading to the creation of a specialized infrastructure for the petrochemical industry.
