Vonyarcvashegy is one of the most popular resort villages on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, located right next to Keszthely. The village's main attraction is the Lido Beach, a paradise for active tourists featuring a water ski course, windsurfing school, and various sports courts. The beach consistently earns the 'Blue Wave Flag' for its excellent water quality and facilities, making it a favorite for both youth and families. The most famous landmark is the St. Michael's Chapel standing on a scenic hill. According to legend, it was built in 1729 by 40 fishermen who miraculously survived a deadly ice drift on the lake. It is the only fishermen's chapel in Hungary and has a wide-open panoramic view of the lake and the distant volcanic hills. The nearby Keszthely Mountains provide excellent hiking trails through lush forests and to limestone caves. During the summer season, the Vonyarc Wine Festival and outdoor concerts bring a lively atmosphere to the village. The hillsides above the settlement are still used for viticulture, producing fine regional wines that can be sampled in local cellars. Vonyarcvashegy is a handy choice for travelers who want to combine high-quality beach time, water sports, and the exploration of historic religious sites.
