Zalalövő is a historic small town in western Hungary, located in the Zala River valley within Zala County. The settlement's origins date back to the Roman era, when it flourished as Salla, a vital station along the famous Amber Road. Extensive archaeological excavations have revealed significant remains from the 1st to 4th centuries, including villa foundations and public buildings. During the Middle Ages, it served as an important toll station on the Zala River; its name ('Lövő' meaning shooter/guard) refers to the border guards once stationed here. The modern townscape is defined by the Parish Church of Saint Ladislaus and numerous houses reflecting the traditional architectural style of the Göcsej region. Today, Zalalövő is a cultural hub of Göcsej and acts as the gateway to the Őrség National Park. With the redevelopment of the railway line to Slovenia, the town has reaffirmed its logistical importance as a border crossing and transit hub.
