Sümeg is a scenic town in Veszprém County, famous for hosting one of Hungary's best-preserved medieval fortresses. The castle stands majestically atop a 270-meter-high limestone hill, providing a strategic lookout over the Tapolca Basin and the Bakony Mountains. Built in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion under the direction of King Béla IV, the fortress played a vital role in national defense for centuries, especially after it became the temporary seat of the Veszprém bishopric during the Ottoman occupation in the 16th century. Below the castle walls, the Baroque town center flourishes with historical buildings, most notably the Bishop's Palace, commissioned by Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró in the mid-18th century. Another artistic treasure is the local parish church, which features world-renowned frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, often referred to as the 'Sistine Chapel of Hungary' due to their wide-open beauty and scale. Sümeg is also a center for historical re-enactments, with regular knight tournaments and medieval festivals that bring its rich history to life for visitors. Geologically, the area is significant for the prehistoric flint mines on Mogyorós Hill, which are a protected site of European importance, linking the town’s heritage to the very beginnings of human civilization.
