Budakalasz serves as the southern gateway to the Danube Bend, situated on the right bank of the river bordering Budapest and Szentendre. The area has been inhabited since the Copper Age, evidenced by the world-famous Budakalasz Wagon, a 5,000-year-old clay model found in a local cemetery which is among the earliest representations of a wheeled vehicle. During the Middle Ages, it was the estate of the Kalasz clan, but the settlement's character changed significantly after the Ottoman era when Serbian refugees settled here. Their influence remains visible through the Baroque Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Gabriel and the historic stone crosses dotting the town. In the 20th century, gravel quarrying became the dominant industry, resulting in the formation of several lakes that define the local landscape today. Lupa Lake has been developed into a premium white-sand beach resort, while Omszk Lake is a hub for wakeboarding and water sports. Located at the foothills of the Pilis Mountains, the town combines industrial heritage with modern recreational facilities, making it a key residential and tourist hub within the Budapest metropolitan area.
